Default Did that 400+mb update just... disappear overnight?

Last night, on 56k dialup, I let the massive update download begin. I sure as heck know that 6 hours wouldn't have downloaded the whole thing. Today I load up GW to continue the painful download process... and within a minute I'm in the game. o_O

So what happened to that update? Must it now be downloaded elsewhere if you want the content therein? Or is it no longer needed?

(BTW, may I stress how happy I am at the possibility that I won't be spending the whole of next week downloading GW updates? ^^)

That 450+ Meg update might have been the Nightfall Preview content. Caused no end of probs. Maybe they removed it, maybe they actually decided to hold off until next weekend, when the Event actually takes place...

Um I'm pretty sure my download was 40-45 mb max....

EDIT: while the download was only 40-45 mb you will probably be streaming in alot more as you play.

If I was off-target by several hundred megabytes, perhaps I *did* get the download done then. I remember people saying it was 400-500mbs in Riverside, but couldn't find the thread when I went looking for it today... There were more than a few 56kers bemoaning the download situation.

You got the inital download. The rest is indeed over 400 megabytes and will slowly stream over the next bit of time while you play. But since you got the initial load and probalby some of the stream you shouldn't have a problem getting into places. If you try to go someplace where there are still downloads it will pull those new files immediately if they haven't streamed already.

What I do and did last night, was launch both accounts and get the initial loads. Then I did a check to make sure my character faces hadn't been fubar'd. Then I went and played on one account and left the second one at the character selection screen. While I played, the second was happily streaming down the 400+Mb of information.

Then when that was done, went and played on a character on that account while I left the 1st account at selection screen streaming the rest.

totally speechless so i am typing this.

start the event, then when there are a ton of extra people to slow things down even more you would have them start a 450+ MB download?

this is a game build so no they havent stopped streaming it til everybody has it.

they want as many players done and out of the way before all the visitors show up to do their downloads

Ah, thank you very much for explaining it.

I haven't tried playing yet since the initial download (except for a quick check of my characters' faces... I distinctly remember my elementalist's mouth being *closed* previously... ) so I don't yet know how much streaming will affect me if I try to play on my connection. Hopefully not badly, or I'll be letting it download via the char selection screen for the next week instead of watching the update bar. At least the scenery is better...

Not every one can afford it or thinks its worth it. I remeber I had dial up for the longest time because of money issues...

Oh, and it is 400mb....if you do -image so you get everything at once....otherwise its not much.

Despite what people are told or what they assume, Broadband connections start for Lower than what Aol and similar companies overcharge for Dailup, and have many more rewards and rebates. I know myself I got 4 months free just for taking the broadband service my phone company provides and the service itself after that will only be dollars more than some are paying for AOL...

Well, if Australian broadband options were as good as American, perhaps I would.

I'm not a huge downloader, though, and almost all of my internet activities (besides GW updates, etc) are easily done with dialup. No download limit, no time limit if you discount the 4 hour sessions. And it costs me about AU$56 every 3 months, not counting the costs of using the phone line.

It's not that I can't afford moving to broadband (I assure you, I can), it's just that I'm one of those people who won't spend extra on something if they can't justify the cost.

Last I checked, BB started at around $70 a month at the lowest downloads. This is, of course, not counting the cost of them setting you up etc, which can increase the initial cost alone to $200 or more.

Eh. I'm sure I'll make the switch one day.

Shadow if you want to download the whole 400 MB (or what you have left of it) at once right-click your Guild Wars shortcut and view Properties. Then in the field Target add -image after the path to the file. For example, on my computer it would look like:

"C:\Program Files\Guild Wars\Gw.exe" -image

Now double-click the modified shortcut and you'll start downloading the whole file. Once it's done downloading be sure to delete -image from your shortcut so it will start the game when you open it.
